The idea of a healthy diet is more of a personal perception. Weight watchers, for example, have their own version of what a healthy diet that is tailor-made for the achievement of their goal. That goes the same for the rest of us. Even when there are prescribed food groups that should constitute our diet, we still have our own preferences. Sometimes we exclude and include other food out of necessity rather than just a personal choice.
Allergies to certain food is one reason why some people do not exactly follow a diet regimen. Diets are often the result of the nutritional requirement of an individual in the light of existing diseases. Religion also plays a major part in one’s food preference. For some, however, the reason is all just a matter of food palatability or aversion. Come to think of it, there is not a single diet regimen that can work for all. We still need to adjust a particular diet in accordance with our personal needs and preferences.
Healthy diets do not necessarily translate to food deprivation. A healthy diet consists of a variety of food from every food group but in ample serving. You have to eat a good amount of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, meat, fish and starchy food. When you provide your body with all the necessary nutrients it needs then you are on your way to following a healthy diet.
While strictly limiting yourself to eating veggies, you may not be getting the right amount of nutrients like iron, selenium and vitamins. It is also one of the main sources of vitamin B12. Meats are rich in proteins that are needed to help build stronger muscles. Strenuous works outs and other heavy exercises are not advisable for vegetarians because muscles often get torn and requires a lot of protein to rebuild them. On the other hand, eating too much meat and less of the green stuff is not good either. There is evidence to suggest that people who eat lots of fruit and vegetables are less likely to develop chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease and some cancers.
Eating a balanced diet is tantamount to eating healthy. Your diet should consist of one-third fruits and anther one-third with starch-rich food like bread and pasta. The other third part is then apportioned to equal amounts of meat, sweets and dairy products. It does take much discipline to follow the prescribed portions but the results have an incredibly huge impact on our health.
It is not enough that we avoid food that is bad for us because healthy diets involve a balance intake of stuff from all food groups. Our society is surrounded by so much unhealthy stuff that having s strong immune system is already a valuable asset. Now, the challenge is for us to sustain and maintain our health.
Make sure that you put as much effort as possible into eating a healthy diet. The long term benefits will be worth the small amount of effort that is required.
